Gludy\'s new Rib - The result of sound advice?

OK after all that ribbing advice my new rib is being delivered this weekend.
It is a Valiant 3 metre single skin floor (40kg) with a Mercury 6 hp FOUR stroke engine (25kg and lighter than the 6 hp two stroke version) Total weight 65kg!!!!!
I reckon that should earn me some brownie points for taking advice.

I was surprised the 6 hp four stroke was lighter than the 6 hp two stroke.

I had advice that this was a particulary good engine. I just hope it can make it to the pub ashore when there is a strong current.... and even more importantly, back to the boat. That seems to be the criteria on which these things are judged.

Thank you all for the advice ..... I will just have to resign from the SAS who train locally here and leave the 25 hp engines to them.

After all that advice I thought you would have bought an Avon, keeping the Welsh economy alive.

Re: good choices

The 2 stroke is 2 cyl hence heavier than the single cyl 4 stroke. You will really like the 4 stroke IMHO. I currently have the 4 and 5hp merc two stokes on various tenders and also the 4 stroke 6hp, all nearly new models, and the 4 stroke is easily the best. Incredibly smooth idle. You made a good choice on both the rib and the 'gine imho.

Damn! Is that 4stroke new (as in a new model)? I looked for lightweight 6/8hp motors over summer, and I couldn't find any light 4 strokes. I ended up with the Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke (which is fine) but I would have preferred 4 stroke.

The 6hp merc 4 stroke has been around since early this year. As for pushing the boat along, it's like any other 6hp motor. But the nice bit is it starts very easily, and it is smooth as a sewing machine even when idling slowly, none of the splutter splutter fizzle out that you get with two strokes that are having a bad day, esp 1-cyl 2 strokes. Good for kids too because they dont have to worry about the knack of getting right throttle/choke/rev-up stuff to stop it phutting out. They pull string, it starts and idles, and they can concentrate on driving the boat and not crashing
