Gludy's Boat in Build

More shots

More photos have arrived:-

Three fuel filters!

I have not asked so I guess the third one is for when you are cleaning one of the others?

I went for the modern style windows without the stainless steel in the hope of reducing the cleaning time.

Hydraulic bow thruster

Re: More shots

What drives the hydraulic pump - PTO from the generator, or from one of the engines? If its from a main engine, is it clutched in/out as required?

As I understood it, things like the Nordhavn drive the hydraulics from the wing engine normally, as the time you need the hydraulic bowthruster is when you're manoevring and thus want low engine revs. Plus you don't want the drag of the hydraulic pump on the main engine when cruising.

Thanks for more pics, always interesting to see /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: More shots

Looks they dropped an oring bellow the thruster tube!!!

All very interesting this, thanks for keeping us posted with the build photos.

That Euro flag is not flag blue - its just plain blue.

To match a flag has to be flag blue ...... if you see what I mean!

Get one made in the right colours. No one will notice. I think it would look cool with a euro flag. Not sure of the etiquette though

Re: More shots

I know its the engines but that is all I know.

You would only be using thrusters at low speed with the engines going. The stabilisers are also hyraulic and work of the engines - they will be working all the time you are making way.

Is there a Euro Sceptic flag?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes there is and they are quite cheap now as they have a Ken Clarks face printed in the circle.

Re: Gludy\'s Boat in Build

I do not think that such a flag would be blue enough for me ..... it has to be a right handed flag and you are obviously talking about left handed flags that have a touch of red in them. Such flags are best viewed through rose coloured glasses to see their true colours.

Re: More shots

Nice pix Gludy, nice job

The third fuel filter might be genset/Eberspacher/etc.

Incidentally, I've always thought it odd that you have one filter per appliance, eg one per engine etc. Would make more sense to me to have one per fuel tank. Anyway, that's a debate for another day

Those are Separ or Racor filters and they are available with an electrical sensor that tells the engine ECU and flashes on the dashboard when here is water in fuel. I cant tell from the pic whether yours are this version, but I cant see any wire coming from the water separators...

That's a mastervolt battery charger, 24/75 I think. Great bit of kit, and great back up from Mastervolt in Romsey. We had a small prob and they just couriered me a whole new charger to Antibes overnight, no payment needed. It is available with a remote battery monitoring panel, plugs in the bottom and the panel goes on your dash or wherever. This is not installed on your boat as far as I can tell from your pic. There is also a plug in battery temp sensor, and that is not on your pic either but maybe they have not installed it yet. (Your pic shows I think 3 cables going in the bottom, +, -, and 220v. The other two glands are for the temp sensor and the remote panel cable)

I'm having the dual racors with the water alarm on the Elling. Bloody smart idea.

Mastervolt seemed very positive when I spoke to them at SIBS as the Elling is all Mastervolt (used to be Victron, but they changed for some reason). Seemed more than willing to deal with any warranty issues in the UK despite the dutch built boat - glad to hear that they're coming through with the goods when required. What was the fault with your charged though? Infant mortality or had it been going a while when it failed?

mastervolt

Rick, not sure what the fault was. I was plugging in loadsa different places in Italy, and some heavy rain, and it just stopped charging. Had 220v at the input, but no output, so the fault was inside the unit. I called MV excellent helpline in Romsey, they guessed there is a sensitive circuit breaker that will have tripped, but they said dont fix it a courier will be there in the morning with a new one. So, at that, I didn't bother to diagnose any further, I just returned to my beer. Then I just swapped the whole unit, which is a piece-of-cake 30min job. This happend in September, and the end of the second season in this boat (mastervolt warrnaty is 2 years). We leave the unit on all the time on the dock so it had been running constantly for about 20months when it died

Perhaps it shouldn't have died, but there is no such thing as 100% reliability, and maybe it was my fault, but either way Mastervolt were outstanding on customer service so I'd recommend them

water in fuel alarm, interfacing

Rick, I forget which engines you are having on the E3 but the Racor/Separ water-in-fuel alarm is Canbus standard to it interfaces with electronic engines like Volvo EVC. So on ours the water-in-fuel alarm displays in the Volvo alarm panels in the dashboards, which makes for a neater job that a seaprate separ/racor free-standing alarm panel on the dash. Hope you are able to get similar...

Re: water in fuel alarm, interfacing

Ah, we're getting the Cummins 450C which is a great engine, but all mechanical. No canbus whizzy management system for us, unfortunately. Not sure how Neptunus will do the alarm panel, but if its up to their usual quality I won't have any concerns. They do their own engine alarm panel (well, as part of the switch/control panel) so I believe they put it on there - on the right hand side:

Err, sorry Paul, didn't mean to hijack your thread /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: water in fuel alarm, interfacing

Looks good. Love those 1/4 turn general purpose switches - they look good quality. Praps order a remote for the a/p and plotter, so you can stay leaned-back in the helm chair?

What's the black unit, vertical mount, to starboard of and behind the steering wheel? Simrad VHF speaker?

Who's Kimberly?

Re: More shots

Agreed. I've got double Racors with water sensors on mine and the peace of mind is well worth it

Re: water in fuel alarm, interfacing

I think that black unit is the speaker - trying to find a better photo. Simrad do have a remote control for the autopilot, but we've not ordered it yet. I need to talk to them to see what it does. One thing I've seen done is to get a followup-steering unit mounted on the right hand side there, which makes the wheel almost pointless (as you can sit back, and just steer with that).

As to who Kimberly is - thats the Düsseldorf boat, so it was the boat name. Apparently, that panel came back with one extra hole cut, so they had to think of something to cover the whole with quick before the show - hence the Neptunus logo and boat name. Not something they plan to do with our boat, I hope /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
