Recently trialed a boat with older, 1988 150hp Volvo diesels.
On a cold engine, interestingly the broker did not open any throttle or use the pre-heater. He says it's not needed. Something to do with compression.
Engines started and all seemed ok.
I've always been told to apply a little throttle(in neutral) and wait for the pre-heat before turning the key
What do you folks all do?
Now I'm confused...

Quite possible the Volvo's had auto-choke devices for cold starts.

Like modern Diesel cars have for twenty years!

My Perkins 4108 starts the same. The 'start' position works the glow plugs too apparently!

With my early 1980s Vilvo diesels, used to count to ten in winter on pre heat and away they went. With my newer Perkins just turn key let oil circulate and bit and off we went.
