Recently trialed a boat with older, 1988 150hp Volvo diesels.
On a cold engine, interestingly the broker did not open any throttle or use the pre-heater. He says it's not needed. Something to do with compression.
Engines started and all seemed ok.
I've always been told to apply a little throttle(in neutral) and wait for the pre-heat before turning the key
What do you folks all do?
Now I'm confused...

Never use throttle, no need to on a diesel usually unless there is a large load on the engine immediately, like hydraulic pumps etc, then a small amount of throttle is a good idea, I do mean a small amount, no need for heaters if the engine is a direct injection engine, most direct injection engines don't have pre heaters, indirect injection engines all have heaters and usually will not start unless they have heat!

Try that with a 1975 Ford Sabre!!

Glow plug light on dash display, and no, he hadn't warmed them up

So I won't need the throttle then in future

Thanks guys
