Glow plug conversion for Volvo 2002?

Maybe; maybe not. I took the injectors out of my 2003T for servicing with no problems.
Agree, I have got away with it a few times but a certain risk factor exists, if diesel knock is not apparent would be tempted to delay that until some other avenues have been explored. OP states that cranking speed seems to be down, volt drop test would be my first go to.

Are there not uprated/geared starters available for the MD200x? The old man had a starter burn out on his 2002 20-odd years ago and I recall the replacement was geared, it certainly spun the engine much more enthusiastically.

There is another possibility which having had the head off and not had any improvement could be our problem too. The 3 fuel injection pumps on a 2003 have a fuel rod that passes through all three and is controlled in the metal box on the port lower side at the front. Inside is a series of springs and levers like a clock. If one wears or breaks the fuel rod won't move enough to be effective as a cold start. The good news is that checking that the fuel rod moves properly when the 'cold start procedure' is operated can be done quite simply by removing a large bolt on the port rear side of the engine and peering inside.

Update based on the input of everyone so far.

After much discussion and debate I have now come to the conclusion that I am avoiding the inevitable.
Low compression is the fundamental problem. Band aid is probably not the answer.
I started today to disassemble the motor.
Will remove from the boat take it home and strip it down on the bench.
I have removed the injectors they appear to be working well but will have them serviced and set up when I get the new pumps parts.
Replacement parts on order to do a complete top and bottom overhaul.
Starter motor is at the Auto Electrician for an overhaul.
Injector pumps replacement parts on order.
Will replace engine mounts.
Will do top end and bottom end overhaul and everything else that comes to mind.
It's winter here and a good time to do this.
Hopefully she will be good for another 30 years :)
By the way I built and launched the boat 30 years ago and she has served us well.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
For those interested I'll gladly keep you posted on the outcome.

the 2003 is a 30+ years old engine. It was always difficult to start after fuel filter change. If there is just a little bit of air, then its trouble or the fuel lines are clocked, r one of the injector pumps are not working proper.....
Very often its one of the injector pumps which causes trouble.
I own a 2003 T.....had the head off twice....

I had a 2002 that was slow to start and produced some blue smoke. Gradually improved in my ownership after running it always 2000 -2500 rpm to keep it working hard, and minimise off-load time. Starting always sensitive to good battery power and connections and cold start was usually required.

I also believe that an upgraded geared starter was available in later years which turned the engine over more quickly.
