Gloriana - where to put it...

More money to be spent on housing something that nobody asked for. There must be a spare garage in Buck House where they could stick along with all the other unwanted vanity projects and unsolicited gifts.

Blimey what a fuss, I thought it was based in Henley as that is where it seems to have spent a lot time recently.

Indeed....it more about Lord True than anything else.

What very few people have failed to realise is the dock will only be available 1.5 hours either side of HW!

Its good to watch though and I have no doubt it WILL happen in Twick

Actually surprised Henley regatta, Leander Club or the River and Rowing Museam haven't pitched for it, Twickenham should grab it while they can.

Erm I would not mention that if you are passing through Twickenham!...we don't have the space, the water or the money needed for it...!

I have mentioned all of the above several times more so as they want to actually use it so will have access all states.

Well,
although I have vehemently objected to the details of the scheme as proposed - the structure looks horrible for a start - I think I'm in the minority locally in that I'm broadly in favour of housing Gloriana in the borough.

I'd like to see a) a competition for the boathouse design and/or b) a better analysis of alternative sites, including perhaps covered floating accommodation in the river. Plenty of room in the heart of Richmond for that I'd have thought, for example....

Cheers,
A.

It's an interesting one..however if they want to use it vs house it then it really needs to be above Tedd or on a mooring. That leaves Hammertons or Tedd Harbour and I know for certain what one of them would say to having it it on there!

I still think Henley is the right place for her or maybe even Windsor.

Twickenham however is not in my opinion. Although on saying that I alway liked it when she was moored at Richmond Bridge.

Mark Edwards wants it nearby to work on / maintain it.

I am sure he does but thats not a reason to dump it in Twickenham at great Expense? Why cant he have it outside his place after all its sets the scene when approaching Richmond. In fact the more I think about it the more I think this IS the place for it to go? what do you think?

Where ?

On the waterside at Richmond ? It has to have security as well , so that things that go bang in the night don't get left on it / rastabillyskank doesn't tag his name all over it. Best thing for it is a pontoon mooring where everyone that wants to see it can see it but not get close. I can think of somewhere , secure pontoons , outside a 24 hr manned lock , with cameras everywhere , but I suspect the owner would see it differently ;) lol

I rather like the old bus to be honest. People should be proud that things like that can still be built.

I remember when they were doing the heel tests in the lock , I said to Mark , ' what's it made of then, marine ply ? '

He gave me a look that said I was dirt and replied ' sweet chestnut , grown on the prince of wale's estate '

Lol

It is a work of art that needs to be used but if it is based in the proposed dry dock at Twick it will only have 1.5 hours either side of HW to get out. That's as much use as a chocolate tea pot....

We'll , it's not like they don't know where they will be on a set date. The itinerary is planned months in advance.

They won't just pop down on a Friday night after work and think 'we'll go for a cruise ! Bugger , the tides out !'

It'll only really be in there over the winter anyway.

Indeed but thats the whole point, only there over the winter and a million quid to find which you and I pay for....It stinks I am afraid.

I disagree with the set itinerary, the idea is to let as many people as possible (local kids etc) use it which means it will need to be out and about most the summer so whats the point of building a boat house just to keep it in over winter. That park is about as dark as it gets without heading to the countryside in winter!

Yes, Richmond Riverside. Construct a secure glass tent (with sun blinds) on a U shaped pontoon. Surely would cost less than excavating and maintaining a dock; no reason it couldn't be just as secure as the proposed site, and would be enjoyed as eye candy by thousands of people who will be there anyway.

(Admittedly the proposed dock can be drained and it may be that the real intention is to leave it empty for most of the winter for maintenance, which of course this alternative doesn't address, but the consultation paper suggests draining the dock would be an occasional thing, an added benefit if you will rather than a key objective. But....)

Needs to go where it will be seen by the greatest number of people and needs to be close to where tourists and visitors to London will be able to see/pay for its upkeep.
Dumping it in some godforsaken featureless urban suburb miles from anywhere with no maritime or Royal history is utterly baffling. Hampton court has got some connections but it miles from central London.

Needs to go St Kats where it will be close to the Tower and just upriver from the Cutty Sark, area visited by millions every year.
They will probably cancel the booking at the last moment however . :)
