I hadn't realised the turntable was simply pushed by hand. I thought it would have had a motor.

Anyway this is history now. The ferry across Loch Carron has ceased as the A890 is now re open.

As a temporary measure, they have laid metal plates along the railway line, and cars now take a detour along the railway.

This must be the only place in the UK, if not the world, where you can drive your car along a railway line.

As far as I can tell (I haven't tried it) they bunch the cars up and then take them along in convoy. Obviously fitting in with the train timetable (only about 8 trains each way per day)

We were in Lochcarron for halfterm this year, the Kids loved the idea of the ferry and were really disappointed when it was canceled on the saturday of our return (snow and wind)!

The turntable IS by hand, the ramps are som what rickety and "twist" to match the angle of the concreate ramp
