I think the above is probably toungue in cheek but....

Our house was hit by lighting a few years ago, I did buy a ticket for the lottery that week as it was one of many bad things going on around us at that time. Still working so you can make your own inferences.

The force of the strike blasted off the corner of the chimney putting two holes in the roof above where my wife was sleeping, it flashed down the TV Aerial, blew the TV, Video and every other piece of electronics plugged in (Computer, answering machine, fax, central heating timer amongst others), caught the lounge curtains and carpets on fire and flashed across and holed a central heating pipe which fortuitously put the fire out. We were lucky noone was hurt, every time I see a house destroyed in the news I give some thought to what those people must be going through.

4 months ago lighting struck the telephone pole accross the road 50yds away, devastating neighbour's house electronics, one of my wife's colleagues had a direct strike on him (and survived)

Lighting does strike.

Off the topic of faraday cages I know but you should see us running aroung unplugging things if there is thunder and lighting around. In a fibreglass boat with a 10M metal pole sticking in the air on water I feel very vunerable.

Good point, many years ago I was a passenger in a Morris Minor van that was either hit, or the road just by it was hit. My father was driving, and neither of us was hurt, though I remember seeing his hair stand up on end. In those days cars had electrics, not electronics, so nothing went wrong.

I saw a test of this theory on TV
A guy drove and parked under High Voltage cables causing a massive and continous arc around the car and to ground. Nothing if my memory serves me was damaged. Though admittedly there was no gps etc in the car.

So \"box\" is a misnomer, really

Thanks everyone. Now that I've been reminded that "Faraday cage" is a more appropriate term, it makes better sense.
