I've sold a dinghy , to be collected tonight.
The person is a novice and is going to take his daughter out.

I have fished out a childs life jacket to give him and I was going to sell (cheap) my spare Auto lifejacket (serviced and checked by me) .

I have some out of date flares & Rockets which we didnt get round to testing last Bonflare night , is there any risk to me giving him the out of date flares .
I remember someone gave me some out of date flares when I first started boating and I was very grateful.

The rest of the batch performed well in the partial batch test.

They are plastic flares, never wet, always stowed inside expire 2005

I am attempting to do the right thing in keeping these guys safe at the same time as wishing to keep the right side of the law.

I would not hesitate to pass them on, but with a warning that he ought to take a pair of welding gloves and safety specs in the same box. And that he should know of the accidents which can happen, and that he should look at the instructions so that they don't become destructions.

I suspect a lawyer might have conniptions at your actions, but ....

out of date flares

As it is a "dinghy", para flares may not be necessary on board, if not going too far out to sea. I would advise to pass on the hand or smoke flares along with advice, but not the paras. Would also advise him to replace very soonest with in-date.

A recent incident from a skipper up here with a disabled vessel ---- the lifeboat requested a flare to find him. While still on the radio his over-keen crew grabbed a red para and went out on deck to put it up. In haste it went off sideways - luckily the wheelhouse door was shut and it just burned out on the deck when it eventually stopped bouncing about. That is nothing to do with flares being out of date...... but they do need treating with respect.

good points, seeing as it is going to be used daylight hours the smoke is most likely the best option.

i was given some out of date flares yesterday and i was grateful as i don t have any-----the only time i have needed to use flares in earnest --they were out of date and worked fine----the look on the crews face as he was winched up to the chopper was priceless----i am laughing as i type

I'd also give him simple clear instruction when he sets if off to hold it downwind and over the side of the dinghy over the water - the dross that falls off is very hot

Simple, ask him to take them to the council recycle/dump place and hand them in for you, get him to sign receipt saying he is going to dump them if he then decides to keep them your covered.
