Judging by the pics of the actual yacht in yesterday's Times, the boat was a Jen/Ben, just sub 50feet, one of the ones with a steering wheel each side, so the 47foot report is probably right

Bit harsh to blame the gf imho. If it smashed just after he went below, he was too close already?

You can't blame the bird - wreckers are still common round Purbeck. They wait for a female piloted boat and quickly hoist a pair of Jimmy Choo's above the rocks and wait for their booty. . . . . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alcohol...

With the current irrational reporting by the MAIB re alcohol related accidents (where motorboats are concerned), Whats the bet that because this is a Sail boat rather than a motorboat, alcohol will never be mentioned!

Be put down to something like steering failure etc

I'm suspicious about g/f driving boat into a bloody great big brown cliff, even an Irish g/f. Surely, said g/f would have alerted b/f that something horrible was about to happen
My SWMBO said straightaway what she reckons happened and I think she could be right. Basically b/f and g/f had gone below for a quickie only the earth did'nt move, literally.
If the story is true though, I do wonder what the insurance co is going to think about skipper putting dozy g/f on helm. Surely, contributory negligence? Still, b/f is described as 'v rich' so no sympathy from me

I actually knew the guy. I didn't know him well but, about 5 years ago, he was my neighbour before he sold his flat and moved to a house. I went drinking with him a few times. He was actually an OK guy so I think it's really sad.

Also, many of the press articles describe him as pretty new to sailing; he'd only had the yacht (presumeably his first) for a couple of weeks. Right now I'm probably a few years behind him in that I'm currently a world-class armchair expert (i.e. I know lots of URLs but realise I know nothing of practical value) who is sufficiently obsessed with the idea of boating that I'm making plans to turn my flights of fantasy into reality (or determine that the reality isn't for me.... either way I have to find out) so I find it very sad that his dream ended up in such a horrible place. His girlfriend is quoted as saying she's not sure she'll ever sail again, I wonder if he will.

Good luck with your dream and whatever you do, don't visit Scuttlebutt, they'll eat you alive.

Thanks for the good wishes and the tip (re Scuttlebutt). I've decided that I prefer to keep my testicles intact so I won't be venturing over to Scuttlebutt!
