Gimballed cooking

I had a first world problem of making coffee in the aeropress whilst underway. Being tall, it is quite likely to topple over. So I made a gimbal that holds the aeropress and allows for pitch and roll.

That‘s an invention looking for a problem.

I’ve no difficulty making coffee. I do it on a gimballed cooker. The mug and filter has never toppled yet and it looks really precarious. What your device would be better deployed for is as a mug holder on the cockpit table for when heeled at 25 deg and bashing into a swell. That’s where all the spills and accidents are.

for 'proper' cooking during offshore passages you probably do need a way of keeping everything inside the pan/tray, even with electric!

We find our Hawkin Classic 3 litre pressure cooker fits the bill, without the weight it's just a pan with secure anti-spill lid. Quite deep as well so good to use as a chip pan if sea state allows :)

Thank you all so much for your input, every single one is going to be invaluable in making my project relevant.

The biggest problem is when the gimballed stove hits it's end stops, a soft stop would be better, but also pan lids that are secure and good pot/kettle securing systems.

This has come up a few times in the survey, dampening looks like its going to have to be a key feature of any gimballed design that I come up with.

What would be great is a way of pouring hot water into a mug for a cup of tea/coffee in a F6 plus without covering the rest of the galley!

Definitely something I’m looking into, although in that kind of weather I’m not sure I could stomach even a cup of tea...

So I made a gimbal that holds the aeropress and allows for pitch and roll.

This is the kind of simple mechanism I had in mind as a starting point, looks like you’ve done a great job of it!

This provides a worked example (if a bit 'involved') of what RupertW and Arcady are referring to. The challenge here, from an industrial design perspective at least, being that 'off the shelf' options are apparently in short supply to convert electrical appliances to a gimbaled setup onboard.

What a great series, thanks! I’ve seen quite a few mentions of electrical appliances, induction hobs look particularly good from a safety point of view if you can get the power.

So when you have finished the project, will you come back and give us a synopsis of your findings and ideas?

Expect a couple of updates culminating around late may of next year, assuming Covid doesn’t derail the academic year any more than it already has...

Once again thank you to each of you, every post has been insightful and furthered my understanding, I look forward to implementing the suggestions!
