Gill kit breathable?

I bought second hand, but like new a Gill OS2J jacket.

Described as breathable but no Gore-tex, just the silly mesh and under that the rubber-like backing of the main material.
Sweat like a pig.
How can they describe it as breathable? (via the neck?)
 
I have a Gill Coast Sport jacket and I rate it somewhere near awesome. Says it's breathable and I've not sweated in it so I assume it is. It's certainly waterproof. I rate their stuff tbh.

What material does it state on the label? Is there the name of a breathable material other than Gore-tex?

3 Dot™, 2 layer laminated fabric, creating an incredibly waterproof, windproof and breathable protective shell

Don't know what it means though.
 
Goretex was the first widely-used breathable waterproof fabric, but it's by no means the only one.

My oldish Gill oilies are breathable.

You should not assume that Gortex is the only breathable material. The horrid thing about Gortex is that it is too big for it's boots, Gortex has all sorts of silly rules about if you can or cannot have pockets etc. It seriously affects the freedom to design a product.
 
I also rate my Gill jacket and salopettes, breathable, about 8 yrs old now. Just washed them today and realised there are two many pockets -I never use them(and discovered one I didn't know existed!)
The neck is showing signs of wear and the velcro needs restitching.

I make no assumptions.
I know Gore-tex is not the only breathable material; there is Ventile (the first breathable waterproof material - apart from skin), Pertex, Low Alpine Triple Point, and e-Vent that is at least 100% more breathable than Gore-tex to name but a few.
I placed my mouth on the inside of the Gill coat (feels like rubber) and tried to breath through it (expel warm water vapour and co20) and my cheeks would have bust before that material let anything through it.
What 3 Dot™, 2 layer laminated fabric is I do not know.
I will be wearing my mountain gear in wet and warm conditions and save the Gill to wet and cold perhaps.

IF you describe your layering system that day we might be able to help. Cotton is a killer so take that out.

If only sailing kit came with an "air conditioning" label I would love to be able to have an item of clothing that could react like a dehumidifier and turn on when I started to sweat instantly transporting moisture away during and after a sail change. Clothing will always lag behind.

The best thing is to stay dry: I have worn a GoreTex jacket on a day that was humid and sweated like a piglet wrapped in sizzling bacon. It was skin on jacket, Had I had a proper layering system to wick away the sweat such as an Under Armour Compression top then my general comfort would have been improved. I may have still sweated like a pig but the transport of moisture would have been much faster through polyester tight to the skin than from skin with sweat running down it battling the thicker much less porous outer layer jacket.

If it is almost new then I cannot imagine you need a DWR treatment such as those offered by Grangers. If you want to make sure, zip it up and poor water over it, if the water all beads away then your fine if not and your left with a wet patch then get online and order some Grangers or Gill Water and Waterproofing spray.

My Helly and Gill stuff will get a Grangers treatment tomorrow followed by a reproofing in the Boiler house. to bring back the beading affect of water on fabric and improves breathability.

The OS2 Jacket is an outstanding jacket - It along with the Musto BR2 Jacket, Helly Hansen Mens Crew Coast jacket are all similar style. The Mesh you get rid of when you start sailing in winter across Biscay and buy the OS1, HH Offshore, Musto MPX ranges.

That's starting to sound like a real possibility, actually.

The seller may or may not know; he might have bought it in good faith and have sold it because he's disappointed with it, or he might be deliberately shifting counterfeit goods. Depends whether "second hand" means a personal friend or a Chinese eBay account, or somewhere in between.

There's a lot of it about.

For me it works the best and has a brilliant lifetime replacement guarantee.
 
I have the OS2 jacket, trousers and even new smock. I rate them highly and after trying the new BR2 musto range, I find them a far better choice. (BR2 jacket is nice, but the flap on the collar is truly dissapointing, could barely close it with my massive face in the way).

I would get in touch with Gill customer service.
