Have seen a couple of these for sale recently. They seem a lot of boat for the money. Are they cruiser/racers? Any idea on build quality and sea keeping abilities? Any comments gratefully accepted.
The Gib'seas of the seventies and eighties were quite different in character from the range that was mercifully put out of its misesry when it was dropped by Dufour a few years ago.
The 92 could be described as a cruiser racer but more accurately, perhaps, as a performance cruiser with space and value for money being top of the priority list. Gib'seas of the 80s were basically soundly built but simply, and occasionally lightly, fitted out.
Of the various mass produced modesl from this era I would expect the Gib'seas to have weathered less well than most. However, a well presented one will offer spacious, well arranged accommodation and reasonable performance - a good bet for a knock-about family cruiser without a large financial commitment.
We had a Gibsea 312 for 4+ years it seemed pretty quick in comparison and it certainly served us well. It was a Rob Humphreys design performance cruiser which also came in a racing version 312+.
It's is a bit bigger than the 92. However we sold it for a lot more than some are asking for 92's.
I understand most of the Gibsea models came three keel options which obviously will affect sailing performance - check the draft of the model in question. I'm not familiar with the 92 - what year is she?
I have a gibsea 84 (same era - next size down). They are indeed a lot of boat for the money.
They are not racers but they are quite sprightly. Especially in lighter winds as they are quite light themselves.
We have no issues with the build quality - its built to a price as you'd expect but there's a lot of wood and it seems to be well put together.
As I said, they are quite light so are better suited to force 4s but our '84 recently took care of us as we entered Chichester harbour in a force 7 so we have absolute faith in her abilities.
I obviously like them as I bought one but I genuinely believe they are excellent boats and are much underpriced compared to their equivilents.
Thanks to everyone. I have since learned that the 2 I have seen for sale (and viewed one of them) have osmosis quite badly, hence the low prices. In France they go for c35k euros depending on age etc. The one I sawa in Plymouth was quite nice but in need of tlc. However it had blisters over most of the hull.
Hey ho! Back to the drawing board. Anyone know of a good cruiser c30' for c12-15k?
