Hi all,
I am considering a GibSea 84, can anyone tell us how well they sail? I quite like the boat and I am not looking for a racing boat, but dont want to find we are the slowest boat in our cruising fleet.
I can find no information about how well they sail and as the present owners aren’t competitive they dont appear to have any idea what she is comparable to. Apparently she has a CHS (dated 2009?) at 0.857, but I can find no results or handicap lists for CHS and I never got involved in CHS when I was racing. Does anyone know what its PY number would be? what boats would be comparable to 0.857 on CHS? or have personal experience sailing a GibSea 84.
Many Thanks All.
Peter

I used to have a share of an 84. Never raced, and wouldn't have expected to. If I am reading the .857 as similar to RORC rating, that would suggest a Cruiser rather than a Cruiser/Racer as I currently have with a RORC rating of .985. My old 84 was a nice day sailer (that was my use of her), but the one gripe/advantage was that she had a lifting keel. Gripe because there wasn't an effective lock, Advantage because you had wider use.

Virtually identical in every way to my last boat, a Jeanneau sun Dream 28. Never raced mine but certainly wasn't slow, in fact I'd say quite a fast boat & I've read that some were successfully raced. Good in light winds, reef early, up to channel crossings, etc. as you would expect...

You may find some comparative ratings for similar yachts on the entry/results lists for the Round The Island Race, though these may differ between identical craft using /not using spinnakers for instance.
Have you checked RYA website for a PY number for club racing?

Used to have one but never raced her so not sure in terms of rating.

What I can say is they are lightly built and handle that way. Sail well, responsive and enjoyable to sail. Took ours cross channel several times. Fun sailing around the Solent etc, cross channel In good weather. Good cockpit locker for a 28 footer and nice deck space. Add self tailers and you could singlehand easily.

Down side, not a boat for heavy weather, slam a bit in a chop, tend to go over not through waves due to being light but wide. Accommodation looks good on paper and works reasonably well but is tight if you're tall. Aft cabin has restricted room between the berth and the cockpit. I'm not massive across the shoulders but would touch the underside of the cockpit if sleeping on that side. Forecabin is better for a couple but I'm 5'11 and SWMBO is 5'4 (nearly) and would fight for foot space. (She won)

Let me know if you want to chat through

Agree with the above. I have a bilge keel version. Have recently got a Byron Handicap of 1071 for low key club racing but have all the go slow options.
