Brother is looking to buy one of these. Can anyone tell me how they sail??, with a lift keel and external iron ballast which it sits on when drying out is it a little tender?? Any known problems with them??

No experience of the Lift Keel or 282 but did have the previous model ( although a Fin)

Always likened it to a big dinghy really. Fairly tender, liked to be kept flatter that you imagined but reasonably responsive to sail trim and helm. Lightly built.

If looking seriously at it as a cruiser, do check out the internal space properly, They have managed to get a quart into a pint pot on paper but it's not that liveable as all the dimensions are squeezed to the max. E.g. forepeak berth leaves you playing footsie. "Aft cabin" is so low under the cockpit that only slim people can turn over.

Fine to cruise on if you're slightly smaller than average but if your brother is a 6 footer then he really needs to think that through.
 
Thank you. My brother is over 6 foot so it might not be the one he is looking for. Did wonder about the interior for a boat of her size.
Sailing performance sounded right too as she has more sail area than the average boat of that size and with a steel plate lifting keel thought it might be a little tender.
 
I've owned one for about 15 years and still enjoy her. Not a boat you buy for sailing ability but more for the lift keel and the excellent accommodation. There is much fun to be had drying out on a cast iron lump - Bembridge at just after low tide, Christchurch is open and best of all Bantham in Devon. Problems... Leaking Windows and lift keel bearings have been a pain but other than that usual maintenance. If you like to race or sail hard don't do it, but if you like to sail and adventure then a good boat.

I have modified and rebuilt a drop keel 282 (as opposed to a centre board which the original really is) for the area I live in, and can let you know about the boat if you still need? I am 6-4 and for a 28ft boat the room is phenomenal and with decent kit it makes a very nice small cruising boat. I have hot water, heating, decent shore power and 3kva invertor, decent electronics and plotter, powered fridge etc etc! I have sailed, owned and raced a lot of boats up to c70ft so my view is not simply because I own this now - she really is a nice boat in the size/facility she is. I race her quite hard at times and she performs extremely well so much so that the original handicap as listed has been changed nearly every time I have raced because she sails way better than she should. She is not tender at all, full sail still on the wind unless getting rough in c18/20kts apparent, and a big kite makes her go extremely well downwind. I do have a folding prop, and I don't have the big ballast shoe underneath as the original drop plate version did, mine has a 1000kg drop keel instead and remaining ballast is internal lead.
