Anyone got experience of gibsea 262 swing keel, how much "waggle" there should be & what to do if it is too much? I've heard that changing the pivot bearing is possible but don't know when it is needed or how big a job that could be.

Thankyou

Chris

Hi,

I have a Gib'sea 76 which is 27' with a swinging keel. The rope goes through the compression post and up through the base of the mast to a winch.

I had it surveyed a couple of weeks ago and while it was lifted I looked at the keel and it does move quite a lot on the pivot bearing. The surveyor said this was fine and a new pivot bearing is unlikey to stop it moving side to side. It does look like a hard job as you have to grind out the old pivot pin through the side of the stub keel and weld in a new one. I think you tend to get a bit of movement at certain speeds, just like the resonance of the engine at certain speeds.

The one thing to look out for is that if you dry out on soft mud, make sure you leave a few inches of the keel sticking through the stub or the mud will cause it to jam up. Obviously if it is gravel the fin will be pushed up automatically into the stub. I have marked the rope to show when the keel is fully lowered and also when fully up and an extra mark when it is sticking out of the stub a few inches.

I know there is a website where somebody did this work and took photos. I will try and find it.

Hope this helps.

i had these on a series of hunter sonatas. much to my surprise the pivot pin turned out to be a 1 inch dia. rod of nylon, hammered in and stuck with sikaflex. took one out after many years use and it was virtually unworn.

sloppiness is caused by a loose fit between plate and case. if it isn't loose it's likely to jam. if there is upwards of 4mm gap you could insert discs of thick polythene which would reduce the wobble and not stick.

if it wobbles, does it really matter? (my wife assures me it doesn't)

Hi,

Good choice of boat, I have found that if I wind up the swing keel a bit, it stops the clanging. It probably puts a little bit of strain on the lifting rope and mechanism but as the fin only weighs about 90Kg it can't be much.

Enjoy your boat.
