I'm off to Gib on Sunday and need to check the latest procedures for entry. We are booked into Marina Bay.

I understand that you now go direct to the marina and there is no customs point to stop at first, is that correct?

The Gib anchorage is still closed and the alternative would be La Linea?

Does the requirement to call up for clearance to cross or approach the active runway still apply for masts taller than 15m (mine is 22m)? If so, who do I call - the last time I called in 2005 in accordance with the instructions in Reeds those at the other end didn't know what I was talking about and just wished me a nice day /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anything else new that I ought to know about?

Many thanks.

When we were there in April we just went straight to the marina and I believe this is standard procedure.

There is a news item in the current PBO about anchoring which says you now can't anchor either south or north of the runway, not sure what the alternatives are for La Linea.

As far as the runway goes my understanding was that you can't pass the end of the runway when the flashing yellow light is operating (although in fact we did by mistake). I don't remember anything about mast height.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. The flashing yellow light was mentioned in the 2005 Reeds but also, ISTR, a general requirement for yachts with a mast higher than a specified level - quite low, I think, to call when aircraft are on the approach - without any suggestions as to how to determine when they are on approach!

If you're booked in then no problem whatsoever. Just follow your nose up the west side of the rock and turn right just before the runway. Talk to the marina staff on Ch 71.

We're on berth 334 if you need any specific info on Gib please feel free to come and share a beer/info.

Hi Chas and Julia, Thank you, we'll look forward to that. I'm David. ETA around lunchtime if, as I fear, we will be motoring much of the time. Otherwise sometime before tea time. David

Hi David

See you at some stage. The flashing light on the end of the runway is a point though. If it's flashing you're not supposed to enter or leave Marina Bay as a plane is landing or taking off. Get too close and the control have a big speaker at the end of the runway and shout polite abuse at you. You won't miss it!

Regards

Chas

Thanks, Chas. The weather looks good for an early departure from Almerimar tomorrow morning though the German forecast for Alboran is dreadful...there is some nasty stuff forecast by the GFS out beyond Palos but I can't see anything else to trouble us. Weird. If we look white as a sheet when we get in, you will know that the Germans got it right /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

David,

I've been using GRIB and XC weather for most of my trip and, whilst the GRIB is computer generated, and XC is usually a bit inland, (airports etc.), they have been quite accurate all the way.

Both show nothing to worry about between tomorrow morning and monday morning - a bit windier around Almerimar and west from Monday am onwards, but I think you would be in Gib by then, (24 hors or so??).

It actually looks like a fairly windless/light winds passage for much of the time.

I'll be leaving Riposto, (where I've been busy washing, brushing and hoovering, volcanic ash off the boat for 3 days), at around 10am, aiming to arrive in Siracusa early evening.

Have a good trip!

Thanks Richard. Yes, that's how it looks to me as well - strange that DWD are giving such strong winds and gusts circa 10! I am never flippant about gusts of those strengths. Sounds like possible storm cells which paint well on my radar so I'll keep a radar watch with alarm - only costs a few Ah which I can well afford and better than losing a sail - seen three blown-out sails so far this season /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif You expect it from racers but not husband and wife cruisers.

Hi - when we were in Gib earlier in the summer, we investigated this issue of anchoring, and made some posts on here. Anchoring is now prohibited in the area of the runway (though you can anchor east of the rock if you want to, but cannot land there.) You can anchor in La Linnea, which is free but is, we understand, the dinghy thaft capital of Europe.

All clearance for leisure yachts is done via the marinas and is very laid back. We had come from Tanger and might have expected additional interest but got none at all.

Have a good stay

We got in at 11am after a windless day and then F3/4 on the nose all night, with 1.5 kts adverse current. Still, better late than never. We are outside the gents toilets /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. In need to catch up some sleep. My wife caught a four pound tuna yesterday evening and is jointed into steaks under deep chill, for tonight. If you are around and interested you might get an invite /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

FWIW David, we're holed up at Almeria having baled out rounding the Gata in v.strong north-easterlies!! Waiting for better conditions - gusting like billy-o - everything forecasts bloomin' north-easterlies /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Sailing, huh! Have a nice time in Gib, sorry to have missed you - our paths/wakes must have crossed somewhere between here and there . . .

You were on my list of people to call today /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif NE? We had it on the nose all the way from evening Sunday to Monday am to Gib plus 1.5kts adverse current /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Never mind.

Almeria is not a bad place for a stop if you can get into the Club Nautico otherwise getting ashore is a problem - how are you managing?

Almeria

Having a really nice (enforced) time - berthed up in the Club de Mar harbour. Well run place, clean, friendly, etc etc Just back from trawling round the town - also interesting and much better than I had imagined. Forecast better but maybe not good enough early on - will make decision termorrer breakfast. Might leave mid-aft, possibly early Thursday.

Re: Almeria

We didn't manage to get in when we went and had to anchor off the tower which made it difficult to tender in. Was there plenty of space? What is the price like? It would be nice to find somewhere to go for a few days in the winter.

Re: Almeria

WiFi yes, however very little space apparent. No liveaboards obvious. Looks like lots of local boats, lots of smaller family motor boats, not plastic fantastics. Good club to join if you're an Almeriando (??). Guess we were lucky to get in - we did contact beforehand from off Gata to say we had a problem, pretty please, though. Aren't mobile phones great! Price not too bad 18 euros for our 11metres incl water and electr. Is that 'not too bad'? Cheaper than Estepona anyway.
