Gibb 28RA winch

Can anyone advise how to dismantle one of these? I've got the drum off and bearings out revealing the spindle and pawls but although it's very loose I can't see a way of removing the spindle. Do I have to unbolt the base from underneath? Hope not, as this will be very awkward to do. I need to get at the pawls, one of which has broken. And on that subject......is there anywhere I might get a replacement?

I don't know your model but I do have Gibb genoa winches. Why do you need to get the spindle off? On mine it is fixed and needs no further action.

Unfortunately parts are rare but some Lewmar pawls will fit or can be ground down to fit.

I don't need to get the spindle off but can't see a way of getting the pawls out with it in situ.

I had Gibb ST winches and had to remove them to fully dismantle them. To access, I had to remove the cockpit cave lockers. A bit fiddly but that's boats for you.
No Gibb pawls available but Lewmar fitted mine.

I had Gibb 16 RA winches on my boat when I bought it, and had trouble finding anyone with experience of them.
They are well engineered but very comp[lex in comparison to a Lewmar equivalent, Gibb probably found them too expensive to manufacture, so they seem to be rare.
As I am not sure if the 28 RA are built the same way as the 16 I have attached a couple of photo’s , if the 28 is very similar I did make up a small document on how to service the RA winch for the people who bought them off me when I changed them to Lewmar.
If the photo’s look similar I can email you this ‘service ‘ doc’.
The main thing is that with a bit of juggling you can strip them down without removing them.

I have a pair of 28RA's ! If I remember rightly, you need to unbolt them from the boat to get to the lower pawls. I used Lewmar pawls to refurbish mine. I think you also need to press out the crossbar at the top. The crossbar has splines to grip the central shaft, but only on one side, so you need to press it out in the correct direction.

^^ #6 Sounds as if the 28RA and 16RA are similar except for size.

I have a pair of 28RA's ! If I remember rightly, you need to unbolt them from the boat to get to the lower pawls.

Just as I feared! I think it's a job I'll add to next winter's list and live with the single speed for now. Annoying that the problem winch was clogged with old dry grease, the other side seems to have been well looked after and works a treat.
