Been following reports of last few days regarding US ships being dismantled in Hartlepool. Lots of controversy as they apparently have Asbestos and other such nasties on board. Thought it might be a good discussion for the forum.
Incidentally my thoughts on the matter are as follows.
Knowing how stringent our Health and Safety / Environmental people are I would think it better to do it in UK and generate employement at the same time, than to have a botched job possibly risking life and the environment in some other less caring country. It is reported that "Able" who are carrying out the work are highly experienced in these matters and have done similar to old oil rigs.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter.

The Tree huggers are making a big deal out of the fact that we in UK are breaking up someone else's mess - after all most ships that are due for the breakers now, were built with asbestos and cabling full of pcbs. UK breakers know this and are set up to deal with it. USA could easily have sent these ships elsewhere where the concern for the environment is less and thus contamination more likely. If UK courts state that the ships cant be broken up here because they should have been done in USA, where does it leave UK because I understand that the MOD have sold HMS Fearless to Turkish breakers!!!!!!!!!!

Ghost ships

firstly, my thread was started just to get the bloody waypoints of the mid channel buoys.

The thread then went off on one..

My thoughts and understanding is that:

1. Able could do the job, but do not have the capacity at present to do the job and require planning permission etc.

2. They have brought the ships over without getting all the right paperwork. they set sail against UK authority advice.

3. They have tried to force our (british government) hand in this matter and been caught with egg on their face

4. USA government thinks they are high risk and even wanted to stop them leaving the USA.

5. 100% agree that we should not send our rubbish or any rubbish to countries which do not have our standards.

6. Yes I am concerned that the ships will be stored in the UK whilst this is sorted out.

7. Lastly, why so many personal insults, Tree huggers, greenpeace hippies, southern scaremongers. Can't we have our own thoughts any more?

this post is not address to anyone but as a general comment to all

Unless a lot of other nasties have been loaded on these vessels they are no different from many hundreds of others which have been scrapped since WW2 or have been scuttled or were sunk by enemy action - and the world still keeps turning.
I reckon the sensation seekers are having a field day over a very mundane procedure which, if done correctly, will do neglegible harm.
Far worse to have them run up a beach in India or just 'accidently' lost at sea.
I believe dozens of this type of vessel (Liberty and Victory ships) were scrapped in the North East just after the war.

Absolutely agree. As Michael Meacher on TV yesterday said, the whole affair has been very badly handled. The impression is being given that these ships have been used as storage vessels for all these nasties whereas they simply have some materials in their construction that require proper handling and disposal as have/had many other ships that are still afloat or have already been scrapped. I would much prefer Able to deal with them efficiently and let UK interests reap financial benefit than some of the other less desirable alternatives.
