What's the most enjoyable bit of the sailing lark do you think? My theory would be that yotties like the getting there bit (must do because there's bugger all room to enjoy yourself lounging around on one of those contraptions when you get there) and motor boaty types prefer the being there.

Don't get me wrong, the getting there can be fun, and pulling out of the marina, setting the autopiolt and pouring a cold beer and relaxing in the sun is a very pleasant way of passing an hour or two, but it doesn't compare to a day lounging in a deserted bay, swimming, eating, drinking, playing in the tender and then going back sunburnt as the sun sets.

Maybe I'm in the minority here but the feeling of arriving somewhere nice and pulling back the throttles, anchoring, turning off the engines and looking forward to a day relaxing with everything you might want to hand is the reason I go.

Bit of both plus.....

.....loafing around in boatyard tinkering with boat.

Good blast somewhere is kewl, looks good too.

Getting there, louging and drinking is kewl and looks good too.

Loafing in boatyard is better than being dragged round B and Q, suffering traffic, etc

......girls, girls, get back, please, one at a time......

You've captured the moment....totally agree

Some philosophers will say it's the journey not the destination, but it only reflects their lack of imagination and total inability to amuse themselves. The've probably got boring friends as well.

oh, and did I miss out the getting jealous looks from the non boaty types as they get sand in their lunch 30 m away on the beach you've anchored off. And the vaguely easy task of meeting interesting new (female) friends as they happen to swim past......

Whilist I cannot claim to be experienced in power boating as yet, my thoughts on this are that I get a great deal of enjoyment out of getting there. When there, then I get a great deal of enjoyment out of just having my own little home there on the water and the pleasure the family has at visiting places.

So I get it both ways, in percentage terms I rate getting there as higher than being there so give that a 100% pleasure marks. I reckon I would give 70% pleasure marks for being there. Then the fact that it has all been combined for everyone gives me 110% pleasure marks.

Maybe my views will change with time and more trips.

Re: Pray tell me

where are these sun drenched calm sea bays you mention? you surely dont do your crusing of the south
coast do yyou?
Its the getting there scores high for me as the other post says, its having your own little home and being able
to take family & friends to other places, plus the buzz of planning a complicated passage and succeeding
thats a buzz.

As a raggie, I really like it when the engine and its noise is turned off and the harmony of sailing the boat takes over. I also enjoy the rush of full throttle on a friend's launch as we leave the confines of the harbour.
IMHO its a bit like sex , both getting there and the destination are great.

Re: Pray tell me

They're in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, lots and lots of them!!! Never done any sailing in the UK since I did my day skipper course.

Re: Bit of both plus.....

How boring. Get a proper boat with a mast and bits of canvas. The only advantage I can see that you have is getting there before us, but the enfullfillment of getting there using the forces of nature far outweigh what you have.

Re: Bit of both plus.....

only trouble with getting there. Is you have come as well!! Best bit is the enjoyment before you get there and ruin it. All IMHO of course!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: Pray tell me stewart

Hi Stewart that explains a lot. I too am off to the Med, Costa Del Sol so hopefully I should be finding what
you describe, can't wait. All I've got to do first is find a berth.
