Hi all - there is a very real possibility that I will be converting to Diesel. I keep reading about the "BUG" but having been a petrol head (and LPG) all my boating life, I've never really taken that much notice. Can all you wise men (and ladies) enlighten me on what this honory criter is, how can I avoid/protect myself from it and any other info may be deemed useful to a potential diesel novice. Sorry Brendan, but I suspect DepSol may service here/forums/images/icons/smile.gif Ta ever so.

Boats tend to get the bug because they have big fuel tanks which create condensation. Also they unlike cars, are left for weeks on end without running. So you get water in the bottom of the tank. Bugs grow in the water, then get stuck in the filters and clog up fuel lines.

Hormoconis Resinae

Green in colour, mats together as a fungal growth blocking fuel filters.

Psuedo monas bacteria

Orange in colour and grows between the deisel and water at their iterface and has a very slimy texture appearance. It is caused by dead bacteria and combines with sludge causing blocked filters and dammage to pumps and injectors.

Desulovibrio bacteria

Black in color and forms sludge on the walls of the fuel tank producing hydrogen sulphide and other acidic waste products. These contaminate fuel and corrode the fuel system.

With yours and DepSol's response I think we may have this covered. I presume the product you talked about either prevents or gets rid of the problem?

It prevents you from fuel contamination and should contaminated fuel be introduced it will remove it from the system.

Hi Dave,

Are you considering re-engining the boat or replacing it?

If the former, am curious to see what size engine will give you similar performance to what you have and of course the associated cost!

Cheers,

Craig.
