Getting the blues with antifouling.

Hard at it rubbing the bottom where I am in the process of fitting a through hull anode, stud is through hull, anode has a foam gasket my question is this will the gasket stop the ingress of water if not what should I apply to the gasket or stud to stop the water coming through.

Do it right and use Sikaflex 291 inside and out and the foam gasket, it's cheaper than having to lift out again!

If yours is the same as mine, the gasket is not used to prevent water ingress. On mine, the stud has a plate welded part way along. Drill the hull, spread CT1 mastic or similar on the plate and stud, pass through the hull and put a backing plate with more mastic and a nut to hold it in place. Once the stud(s) are in place put the gasket and anode onto the studs and hold on with the nuts.

Just done it, earlier this week, with a transducer, we do not have CT1 but have what seems to be an equivalent from Fix-Tech. The transducer comes with a flexible rubber (type) gasket, not sure what its meant to do. Cleaned AF from round hole, shim of sealant on bit of transducer actually in hole, sealant on overlapping part of transducer on outside of hull. We had previously made a spacer to take up hull form from glass and epoxy. Transducer fitted, fitted spacer and then bedded down with threaded securing ring from inside. Once bedded in removed spacer and securing ring, more sealant on inside of hull. Spacer on top of the sealant and ensured hole in spacer filled with sealant. We also ensured there was no sealant that would lock securing ring. We then bedded down again with securing ring. Left to set off, 2 days. Tried to tighten securing ring further, would not budge.

Boat back in water - no water ingress.

I think the gasket is really only intended to accomodate surface uneveness and perhaps reduce reactions with certain hull materials. The mounting posts need to be sealed with mastic and I always fit an untreated hardwood pad inside - this takes up with any seepage and swells, sealing the assembly. I still have a collection of "mahogany" offcuts rescued from the club's November bonfire for such jobs.

Done the job today as described above plenty of sealant seems alright the big test is when it goes back into the water?
