Getting movies from Internet onto usb memory stick

Loads of sailors seem to be able to log on to the internet, download films ( either legally or otherwise ) then put them onto memory sticks which plug into usb slots on TVs. Voila, they have films to watch.

Can someone please explain how to do this? A good long winded explanation would be nice.

We have a MacBook, so an OS X solution would be good.

Also can someone show us where to search for sites to download films or TV shows? Ideally as Internet is patchy, a non subscription service would be useful.

You will probably meet a lot of people as you make your way west who have collected films tv series etc on external hard drives from various sources. (can't guarantee that they will all be from a legal source) We have collected hundreds of titles this way and in fact just swapped a our ext hard drive with a Super yacht engineer so have hundreds of new ones. Happy to let you copy our colection should we meet up somewhere along the way.
 
To download legally on to your Mac just go to the iTunes store
To download illegally like everyone else try googling for Yify or Kickass Torrents - these are the best sites - yify only does HD quality movies from Blueray but at tiny file sizes

Then download a torrent client - for Mac the best is called Transmission - just google that with the word torrent client and you'll find plenty of places to download the software. Its small and free so don't worry

Then on the Yify or Kickass site pick your movie , click the link to download and you'll download a tiny file to your download file (on the dock at the bottom as a default) and this is the torrent tracker. Click on that and Transmission will open and do the rest. It will download the movie and then when finished you just drag the movie file (normally in MP4) to desk top to watch or to a USB stick etc.

If you want to watch on your Mac then also download VLC player - much better than the stock video player (Quicktime) and plays all file types. Again its a small file and free to download.

Once you've got the hang of that you can save time and data by using a site like Filestream - they download the torrent for you at high speed and then you do a direct file transfer from them to you - its often quicker BUT they charge if you want files over 1Gb so if you are happy with 720p movies its all free (and they don't need card details etc like some) but if you want 1080p movies then the files are generally over 1 Gb so you'd need to pay about £3 a month.

It may sound complex like this but just get Transmission, visit Yify and in 5 minutes you'll realise how easy it is
 
To rip DVD's just download a free DVD rip software - for Mac the best is Rip It (free for the first 10 movies) and perhaps Handbrake (free software) to convert the files to the best and smallest format.
 
Well as the op, I can say that this system is working well.
We downloaded the bit torrent programme.
The torrent sites are a massive black art.
Have used kickass a couple of times. If you search for a title, and then somewhere associated with the title, there is a symbol like a magnet. Clicking that seems to download the programme.
However , wrong clicking or other symbols seem to attract adverts for Russian brides and online gambling
 
Yify is easy - use the browse movie (top corner) to browse or search. Pick the one you want and click on the 720 or 1080 graphic below the movie graphic and it will down load the torrent file - then use your torrent client to open it. You'll get annoying pop up pages etc but just close them as they come and you should find it straightforward

As you say, magnet links are best but, for new users, it's best to get someone to show them around as there are some download sites with some very nasty viruses (not the Russian brides) if you don't watch what you're clicking on.

Thanks for taking the time, but, we are obviously seeing different things as all I get are a set of sponsored links, no movies no choices.
 
Related topic, I recently came across get_iplayer - https://squarepenguin.co.uk/. All command line but makes it possible to download BBC content that otherwise would only be available as a streaming service, ISIHAC for example. It also makes it possible to download BBC content on Linux which the in-house tool doesnt support. TV downloads still require a UK IP address though

Alas I live in an IT desert .... that might as well have been in Chinese!
 
If you download QBittorrent, (http://www.qbittorrent.org/) then you get a search tab and it finds the sites like yify and kickass that have your desired movie, TV series, music, eBook that you might want. It then downloads it Bittorrent style when selected.
