Getting GPS to talk to VHF

Sorry if this has been done to death before but I've been trying to no avail to sort this out. I've tried several wiring combinations and fiddled with the output data setup on GPS.

Saw some vaguely related threads on other forums via Google but nothing close enough to my setup.

I have a Furuno GP-31 GPS navigator and need to get it to send lat/long data to my Navman 7100 VHF.

Has anyone got a similar set up and can you remember what colour wires go where?

The GPS has a screen with wiring set up but it's not very clear, likewise the VHF manual.

Also the Furuno has a "ground" output on the back, separate from the wire outputs that has never been connected to anything, is this important?

Looks like the GP31 outputs NMEA data on WHITE and BLUE cables (blue being gnd i think) and that the output needs to be turned on in the menu somewhere according to a footnote in the connection diagram.

On the Navman, GPS+ is yellow and GPS- is green.

So you want to connect white to yellow and blue to green.

Also check the GP-31 is outputting at 4800 baud and parity is set to NONE (if option is there).

Cobolt thanks for that very helpful reply. That's different from what I prev tried so I'm hoping this is now the correct combination.

I'm going down to the boat tomorrow morning to try this out.

Good luck, out of interest what had you tried previously?

Seems the correct settings for output are under I/O Settings in the menu.

Set Data 1 to "NMEA-REM1"
NMEA Ver 2.0 should be OK, but you could also try 1.5 if no luck.
 
I tried all combinations of settings in the "I/O" menu

I prev had tried connecting yellow and green wires from the GPS to yellow on the VHF, didn't think the white was relevant.

I saw a wiring diagram on a different forum (maybe it was fixya.com?) which made no mention of the white so I had been ignoring it. I was thinking of just trying all possible combinations but I didn't know if that might cause some sort of fault.

Do you know anything about the separate ground output on the GPS? I bought the boat last year and this has never been connected.
 
I think that's more for power / signal grounding but don't know for sure. It shouldn't affect getting the GPS data out and into your VHF. If it hasn't been connected, I wouldn't change anything.

P 20 - 3-7 NMEA protocol (COM PORT)

The radio can be added to a group of instruments using NMEA protocol.
1. Select RADIO SETUP, then COM PORT.
2. Select CHECKSUM ON (on) or OFF (off) then press ENT to enable the setting and return to the menu.
CHECKSUM ON is the usual setting.
 
The furuno gps31 has two nmea outputs. one is white and blue and the other yellow and green . The reason I know this is one of mine stopped working. You can do a simple check with a multimeter . On the output. it should pulse 5v every second or so.

So you shorted the outputs and then expected to feed these into the set on a single wire?

Hopefully it will still work, but do get some help next time. It is quite easy to cause a fire or an explosion with boat electrics if you are clueless.

I meant I tried the wires individually, not shorted together.

Hi, I did get to the boat and am VERY happy to report...

It worked!

Your suggestion was the correct one, and now my VHF has lat/long for the first time. I'm really pleased.

This forum is great for bang on advice. Altho obviously opinions can sometimes vary..........:encouragement:
