Just thought I'd ask here as you guy's should know.

I'm considering getting an ordinary cast iron stove enamelled in the UK. Has anyone done this before and does it cost much? Are ther any "competitively priced" (ok, cheap) firms that do a good job, especially in the South West?

Thanks in advance.

Enamel" is a term that seems to cover a multitude of sins. It is used by the motor industry for heat baked paint, which you clearly aren't interested in.

"Stove enamel" is often used for a similar process that will just burn right off a stove.

What you seem to need is vitreous enamel, in which glass powder is fused onto the metal with extreme heat - the finish on old enamel baths - and is excruciatingly expensive, try £1000 for a 5'bath, and can only be done in 2 places in the UK (on bath sized objects, that is) one in the Wirral, one on the I of W.

Sand blasting and heat resistant stove paint is the way to go.

ps. All this is available on Google...

It can also be done by kingfisher enameling in Birmingham. They charge £820 for reenameling a full size solid fuel Rayburn. Fantastic job to. They did mine for the house and you cannot tell it from a new one!

Aga cookers can also be refurbished at relatively economic cost and with excellent results. Try googling "Aga refurbish" or similar and try some of the firms listed. They'll probably do - incl. vitreous coat - other cast iron products too.
