Taking plunge and shipping my boat over to Turkey in March. Will arrive in Izmir then I need to get it to Gocek. Am either planning to hire a local skipper to help me take her around on the wet stuff(seems like quite a long way!) or put it on a lorry and have it driven down if that possible. It is a sunseeker portofino 47. Any advice appreciated.

Lovely trip by sea - assuming you can pick a departure time weatherise and are not in too much of a rush it could be great fun!

It's only 250nm or so isn't it? In which case, have a great long weekend cruise and take her yourself. 250nm is nothing for a med cruise in a 47 and you get to see all the Bodrum and Marmaris bits on the way. On my last delivery trip, Easter 2011, I did 350nm in one (long) day from St Carles de la Rapita in Spain to Antibes. Piece of cake, really

MYAG on here is an expert on Gocek btw.

Forget trying to move by road, sea is the only real and safe option for a boat your size in Turkey. I have done the Izmir/Gocek route many times, its a straightforward and interesting trip with a couple of islands and passages to negotiate, just try to stay on the Turkish side to avoid any hassle, March is a quiet time of year and you will be noticed by Turks and Greeks with little else to do.

Unfortunately Izmir to Gocek on one full tank is pushing it in a Portofino 47. Depending on what time you get released from customs in Izmir (that can be fun), you may need to overnight in nearby Levent marina. Fuel is by tanker and the marina office can arrange in the morning. Alternatively, if you ship the boat with around half a tank that will easily get you round to Cesme where you can top up which will comfortably get you on to Gocek (best option).

Its a great run with a predominantly following sea that will take you a full day (around 12hrs) if you want to do it in one hit. You can stop off in Marmaris/Bodrum if you like, but if you are going to be based in Gocek you will probably be doing this quite a lot in the future anyway (they are just 3-4 hours away).

BTW the Turkish Sunseeker guys will be on the stand at LIBS next week so if you are going to the show it would be a good idea to introduce yourself and let them know your boat will be in Turkey, unless of course you already know them. Good luck with the trip and I look forward to seeing your 47 in the bays. Happy to help if you need more info.

What a really nice helpful post MYAG!!!:):)

Proof, if proof were needed, just how good YBW.com and its users is/are.

What a fantastic site this is. Loads of great advice and a few pm's from turkish based skippers offering their services. Roll on the summer. Thanks again MYAG, hope you dont mind me picking your brains in the future about various Gocek related matters. Glad i changed my mind on Corfu now, especially with what the Italians are up to. Turkish debt to GDP 40% :-) .
