I have to get a part weighing 30kg to my boat in the canaries. The shipping quote is north of £400.

Any ideas?

Anyone sailing that way in the next few weeks??

Thanks Tony

You don't say the collection point or which of the Canary Islands but £200 is nearer the mark.

Maybe less by a courier....DHL, FedEx etc...?

Ask around an see what works where you are

We tried DHL and they did not know where the Canaries were, the goods went from the UK to Madrid, sat there for a few weeks then were returned to sender without contacting us, we were told afterwards this was "normal" with DHL

Another option is to hop on a plane.......

Just got 20 kg parcel shipped by regular post from EU, in Canaries it was delivered by Correos. Shipping price was 60 euro. As fas as I know most regular posts in EU ship up to 30 kg parcels to Canary Islands. Also check https://www.parcelmonkey.co.uk

Louth, lincolnshire to Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.

Over the weight limit for most 'branded' couriers.

Had exactly that experience with DHL.

An item worth £100 cost more to ship, clear customs and collect. They wouldn't release unless I was present on the island!

Too heavy for hold baggage!

You can book freight on an aircraft for a fraction of the cost of baggage regardless of wether you are travelling with it.

I used to travel with 200 KG of music equipment and would book this with most airlines by calling their freight department. It requires a few forms to be filled out and then you have to deliver the kit to the freight terminal and pick it up from the freight terminal at the other end, but other than that it's simple.

With some routes it's best to use a freight agent, as they will handle the transfers between planes etc, but always worth calling the airline freight dept to check. My experience has been that they are incredibly helpful.

Parcel force quote three times that!

Not sure how that works!

It’s called market segmentation. Charge top dollar to the numpties who’ve gone straight to parcelforce.com without shopping around (no doubt charge even more to the luddites who’ve walked into your shop), offer the best price you can manage to those who are seeing it in a comparison grid against all your competitors.

£50-60 can be found on the usual suspects like Interparcel, Parcel2Go etc assuming size is OK.

Critical bit is dimensions due to volumentric pricing. If there's lots of light packaging, you could be paying a lot for it. eg 60x40x40cm would be 19.5kg volumetrically but 80x60x60 would be 58kg (based on a factor of 5000 and rounding up). If volumetric weight is more than actual weight, that's what you'll pay for.

Why would you care? You'll pay to Parcelmonkey and get all shipping docs for Parcelforce. Then just arrange Parcelforce driver to collect your parcel or drop it off at a Parcelforce Lincoln Depot.

p.s. Do not forget customs declaration. If your parcel value is less than 150 euro = no taxes, if more = 22-30 euro for DUA and +7% tax. If value is more that 150 euro, it would be better to ship it to someone local with DNI/NIF for smoother customs processing.

Thanks to all!

It is an absolute minefield!

So far CK Haulage seem the most preferable. Onto a truck in Essex, off a truck in Tias!

Drop off to them, collect from them, or they will pick up and deliver. Marina trips are routine.

I will report back when mission is complete.
