there is an uber web ferret called Warren who is a KTLer and MOB and he sent them to me

I think that the boat in here is much more credible - so much like the little boats used by the Humber Yawl Club at the turn of last century

also impressed at the size and weight of the dinghy he tows around

We have done many of the drying passages behind the German East Frisian islands over the last few years, and visited Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge, (several times) and passed close to Memmert. They are very well marked with buoys and withies now. Lots of Germans we met there have mentioned Riddle of the Sands, but this is the first I have seen of their own film.
Yes, Dylan, there are loads of snaps. If you really want to see them, I can sift out a few and send them to you. It is an area that you would love!

much more credible Dulcibella I think

Thanks for that Dylan.... great stuff!

I've no idea of who's right, but Drummond Challis, who produced the English version, assures me that he went to great lengths to make sure the film's 'Dulcibella' was as authentic as possible (he did loads of research, through all sorts of archives, with, if I recall correctly, the help of someone who ought to know a thing or two, from Laurent Giles Partners).

He was charm personified when I told him my view of the liberties he took with the book's plot.

Thread drift ...
Not 'Riddle of the Sands', not a film serialisation, but definitely old sailing boat porn of the old paper (or eBook) variety.
I can highly recommend KICKING CANVAS : CAPTAIN A. A. BESTIC.
Autobiographical and beautifully written by a very humane, intelligent man who became a seaman just as sail was about to surrender to steam. Reminiscent of Joshua Solum, Two Years before the Mast', etc.
I loved it so much that I just had to say.

Sorry about the thread hijack.

Firstly, all power to anyone who is taking an interest in this excellent book.

Scuttlebutters will be interested to revisit

, which is a couple of English gents who plan to produce a new version of the story "curiously specific about dates and places" next year. They are seeking help with the seafaring aspects of the book and I have been helping out as far as I can.

2) The boat shown in the video might make great "cutter porn", but it can't be "Dulcibella", which was a yawl. Davies puts into Flensburg at the start of the book and has a mizzen mast fitted by a local carpenter before Carruthers arrives and the story gets under way.
