Basically the system seen on Farr 40s etc. A block on the traveller, and a double block on the boom. The mainsheet runs down from the boom to the traveller block, and then back up to the double on the boom. The two lines from the double block then run forward along the boom to blocks either side the gooseneck, and then run down to the deck either side of the coachroof, then run aft to winches on either side of the cockpit - normally just forward of the helmsman.

The thing about it is that the traveller is completely isolated from the mainsheet - dropping the traveller has no effect on sheet/leech tension.

Have a look here: http://www.harken.com/rigtips/mainsheet.php - scoll down to system 8.
Edited by Keen_Ed on 27/09/2004 09:02 (server time).
