How GPS is Killing Lighthouses

Well, it happens in Holland as well, though they came back of shutting them all down.

It's been happening already: Happisburgh is only running due to the locals taking it on.

I hope not. While I use a GPS and carry a back up there is still somthing safe in actually seeing a light.

I also think that Ellen was glad to see the lume of a light this week being the finishing line.

Of course it will, the British lighthouse authorities (note the plural) make no secret of the fact that they keep the need for and use of navigation aids under review.

Trouble is, if we kick up a stink, the powers that be will use that as an excuse to charge leisure boaters for the upkkep. We can't win except by keeping shtum!

Isn't it a good thing that wind generatores are going to be everywhere with lights on so we dont bash into them. They do appear on the charts and will be very useful.

Hope no-one has a gps failure in fog with a spring tide running. Might get quite a fright drifting through the spinning blades!
