Genoa to Malta

Has anyone any experience of cruising down the west coast of Italy from Genoa down toward Malta?
I've worked out its approx 700nm? I'm wondering where is the best places/marinas/anchorages to pull into on the way down.
There is 2 options, either to get my boat shipped directly to Malta or shipped to Genoa then cruise down.
The cost difference allows for fuel etc between the two so works out roughly the same and obviously incorporating the cruise down as a long holiday if time allows. The boat is a Trader 41+2 cruising at approx 10 knots for best fuel economy.
Any thoughts will be appreciated

Can't offer any useful advice apart from keep clear of getting too close to Isola del Giglio to wave at the girlies

In spite of its title, the trip was exactly the same you are planning, just the other way round (i.e. heading N rather than S)...
