Genoa size (furling) vs windward performance

We have a masthead-rigged Westerly Storm. The headsail it came with was a huge Genoa. We soon discovered that we needed to reef it most of the time, both for sail balance and so that my diminutive crew can sheet it in. We had a 100% jib made. The result is a much better-balanced boat, less reefing of main or jib, and a happy and efficient crew. Of course, we lose out in light airs, but I wouldn't go back to a rolling big Genoa. We can always change headsails if necessary. As to the pointing aspect, Storms come with inner and outer car tracks. Using the inner one makes a huge difference to pointing ability. I suggest the OP considers using a Barber-Hauler, or some such to get the leech further inboard.
