Genoa shredded

Strong winds have caused yet another members genoa to partially unfoil and be shredded. It was secured by four ties according to the owner, but the wind pulled a section off genoa free. I have suggested that the practice of removing the genoa sheets has resulted in the genoa being damaged, the taunt sheets help stop the genoa from unfoiling, any other ideas. Also does anybody know if a UK sail manufacturer makes genoa sail covers, saw some in Holland two years ago but have not seen them in the UK.
Many thanks
Trevor

Trevor, The sailmaker at Woodbridge made one up for my Tomahawk a few years ago. It was hauled up over the genoa with the halyard and as it was hauled it was zipped down. It was then tied down to the deck, it worked fine. I think it was Suffolk Sails but not 100% sure.

Yep I can supply you with a furling genoa sock which sits in a little bag under the mast and you just pull the cord and it slides up the furled Genoa covering it with a skin tight fit and pull the other cord and it slide down again and stores itself back in its bag.

In his defence the boat was off the mooring the week before so he may well have used the genoa. Its roller reefing, I do not remove my sail, do you remove yours after use, as far as I know if you do you will be in the minority!

Thanks

Phil,

Thanks, Woodbridge Tidemill Yacht Harbour is on my summer cruise list, yes you are right it is Suffolk Sails just over the railway line. My wife (super hero) made me one which sounds similar but the material was not man enough and its on its last legs/haul but has done well for 3 /4 years.

Thanks again
Trevor

Yep for a Beneteau First 305 o 305S it is £410 P&P

This is in the colour of your choice and made from Sunbrella Plus which is totally UV resistant and includes the whole system including the bag and detailed instructions for fitting, which is simple.

All you will have to tell me is the year of the boat and if the Furling has been replaced. If it has been replaced then we will need to take measurements othewise I have them stored on computer.

Dom

PS I take it you did mean the HGE and not the sail itself?

Re: Genoa shredder preventer.

Arrange the furling rope so when fully retracted it wraps the sheets round the furled sail a few turns, and cleat furling line and sheets securely.

Use a lashing between the tack of the sail and a foredeck fitting so it cannot turn.

Aspires headsail has survived 3 winters and many storms without problems.
