Genoa cars in the dishwasher - what could go wrong...?

Encouraged by a recent similar thread, today I packed the dishwasher with my collection of genoa cars, mainsheet blocks and winch handles. I was busy stripping the sheet winches for similar treatment when it occurred to ask here what experience others might have. What powder, biological or otherwise, have peeps found successful? What, if any, damage might be done....?

Grounds for divorce I would think. Otherwise so long as no little bits escape and get jammed in the pump it should be Ok.

I think if you use a washing machine powder in the dishwasher, you may find the dishes have a funny taste afterwards.

I think you should use a 3-1 powerball lemon tablet. All the bits will then smell nice and lemony.

I would buy the tablets from waitrose as its for your yacht.

Why on earth would you want to that, just use a bowl of soapy warm water and a brush. Heaven knows how much abrasion the kit will get with salt blasted at it in the dishwasher.

Dishwashers blast things with salt?

I am sure ours does not do that. I always though the salt was for regenerating a built in water softener.

Some folks do have very odd ideas about how stuff works. As you say, the salt is only used to remove the calcium ions from the ion exchange resin in the water softener.

Kellyseye may be wrong about the salt but I wouldn't do it. The extreme temperature could damage plastic bits.

my mate thought he would chance it when his wife went away for the weekend and he put his austin seven cylinder head in there. I have no idea how he thought he was going to get away with that one, but the new dishwasher he had to buy certainly cost more than having the head professionally cleaned. you'll be picking bits of anodised ally out of your crockery for months.

Some dishwasher stuff is quite caustic and will attack any aluminium where the anodizing is worn.
Have you seen what dishwashers do to glasses around here? They go opaque.

The main ingredient in the one we normally use is sodium carbonate... good old fashioned washing soda.

I have found that using the car wash works for me and saves money, I have a special basket that I tie onto the roof rack and just have a standard wash hey ho all cars cleaned.
Warning don't have the polish cycle as this affects the workings.

I wouldn't put anything aluminium in there - it buggers aluminium saucepans etc. I did put some bronze rigging screws in mine though and they came up a treat.

I know some of it used to contain caustic soda, not sure that all still do, I'd advise caution with ali.
I have blocks on my dinghies that salt up, I normally chuck them in hot water straight from the hot tap, plus a bit of fairy liquid and it does the trick.

Works for me, too. More relaxing than a shower....
