Just bought yacht with Mastervolt "Wisper 6000" genny. It ran for a few minutes during survey. Ran for a few minutes after purchase, then stopped. Unit is 4 years old with 20 hours (twenty). There is voltage (12.8v) to the control unit. Pressing "glow" used to produce the usual whistle prior to start. Now it does not. Starter does not turn. I did have dud auxilliaries (7v), but the genny has own starter.
The unit ceased to run after I had it running, the battery charger "on", auxilliaries "on" and the turned the auxilliaries "off". Since then, its dead as described.
Any thoughts?
Many thanks in advance.

OK, here it goes

1. Is starter turning or not?
2. If yes than you should check the control unit.
3. Is there a override button?

I had the similar situation with my Fisher Panda some time a go. I had to replace a 1€ IC in generator control unit. And it worked.

Many thanks Slavkov
1.Is starter turning or not? - No. There is power to the control unit though.
2. If yes than you should check the control unit.
(no)
3. Is there a override button?
Will check on Sat.

I have a mastervolt whisper 3500, 3 years old and 400 hours,
the engine did not start properly and we could not find a proper reason
but after measuring the compression, we noticed only 12 bar.
after dismounting the cylinder head we noticed that the inlet valve and seating were totally corroded away; cylinder head and valves must be replaced. As the generator set is mounted in the center of the boat, half a metre above the water line, this looks strange to us.
Has anyone similar expieriencies?

Could it be that the engine was slow to start (glow plugs not heated, fuel problem, poor battery, etc.) and while cranking for a long time water from the exhaust cooling came back up the exhaust pipe, through to the valves? This is a well-known problem and is the reason one should never crank a marine diesel for very long if it doesn't start.
