Looking for advice please!!

Have just ordered a new sports cruiser at SIBS and to close the deal I asked for a 7kw generator - and got it!

The agreement was centred around an Onan 7kw which is the factory option but this is not a factory build boat so it has to be retro-fitted, which may not be straightforward as access is not easy.

Is the Onan the best option? Paguro have been mentioned but I'm wary of anything running at 3,000 rpm against the 1,500rpm the Onan runs at plus their unit is 8kw and more expensive (which I'd have to pay for).

All thoughts appreciated

Onan seem to have a pretty robust reputation in all sorts of boats.

I had an HFL 7kvA, based on the Mitsubishi diesel engine. Excellent piece of kit. Water cooled engine and ditto generator in a hush box, so almost inaudible from outside the boat.

Aside from that:

Leuven University have been developing a micro gas turbine with a rotor dia. of 22 mm and a power output of 1 kw: not big enough for your requirements, but it does look like a future answer because of its size:power output, and its long life (appr. 12000 hours)

Even home-made ones are appearing:

Onan = very nice piece of kit, quieter than the Paguro because of the rpm - but also a lot heavier. Depending on the size of the boat you've ordered the weight penalty may or may not be a problem.

Mjf of this parish had a Paguro installed late last year, and at last report was very pleased with it - his write up is here:

But in a straight fight between an Onan and an Paguro, I'd go the Onan in a blink.

What boat did you buy?

Cheers

We had an Onan Genny fitted to our P42 and have been delighted with it. Lovely and quiet meaning you can run it without fear of upsetting the neighbours. A very slight vibration but not so much that you know it's on all the time, you just think every now and again, oh the generator's running.

I think the benefit of going Onan is that they are well represented here in the UK and you're never going to have any problems getting it serviced. When it comes time for re-sale everyone will know the brand and you won't risk putting anyone off.

A no brainer for me.

Henry :)

Bought the Beneteau Monte Carlo 42 - the actual boat on the stand

I am a fan of Kohler generators. Sunseeker always use them.
There quiet, reliable and not as rusty as a Onan.
