These cheapo generation 1 night vision scopes. Are they any good? Or pieces of worthless tat?

Ask John at AllGadgets. He posts here as "milltech", and knows a lot about Gen 1 night vision, having been an importer of the stuff for about 10 years. Even though he sells the equipment, I'm sure he'll give you an honest and objective opinion.

Depends what you want to use it for? I've a Gen1+ on the boat thats ok. Though in total darkness, or not much light about, no moon etc you'll need one with an IR source. You can see lots of green things!
I've a gen 2 rifle sight that knocks spots off the gen 1 though being a rifle sight it needs better optics etc as its used for aiming.
The old gen1 sight I have has changeabl lenses. I've dumped the original lens and fitted a 200 mm tele from a camera that uses the M42 screwmount. I've even got a camera adapter that came with the site. Look at the Soviet Bazzar site for a good range of ex military sites.

What was the effect of fitting the new lens? Usually adding magnification will reduce the field of view as well as the amount of light the viewer has to work with, though I guess a nice bigger lens would compensate.
