Gel coat or linear urethane

Hi all,

this is a subject which i know little about, so i'm looking for an opinions. I'm looking at a boat that needs the gel coat removing, and looking into replacement options...

Never heard of linear urethane.

The normal remedy is epoxy (eg Gelshield) applied after a period of drying out.

I think he is speaking for painting the exterior.

Urethane paint is easier to apply, and comes more smoorth to gel coat in most cases.
That is depends who is applying it.
It should also be cheaper to do.

If you put paint I suggest AwlGrp (not cheap) or one of the slightly cheaper similar paints.

You put epoxy or replace resin if you have osmosis problem. Osmosis is not a symptom of gel coat but of resin and mat.

Definately a job for a pro if you wan't pro results.

Paint is much more glossy than gelcoat (topcoat) and will make even the slightest uneven patch stand out flickering.

If gelcoat needs removing as part of an osmosis treatment you should investigate the whole proces and make sure, that products designed for the job (and for cooperation) is used. As this will be sub waterline areas you most liekly will end up with antifouling anyway, making the gloss issue is irrelevant.

does all this mean that 'linear urethane' is a posh word (or two) for polyurethane paint?

and, if the problem is deterioration of the top-sides, why does the gel coat need to be removed?
