"No yacht engine has died of use", quote from knowledgeable Essex lady. Nevertheless, I plan to re-engine my latest purchase, despite the fact that I avoid engine use as much as possible. Heavy displacement sailing craft, requiring 22 shaft h.p. to reach 6 knots. The gearbox choices include a Technodrive and the more expensive Hurth/ZF. Any views, based on evidence, which might influence my decision?

I fitted a Technodrivebox to a BMC 1.5 back in 1980 and although I sold the boat about 10 years ago, the box is still working without any problems. I have just fitted a Hurth box to a Ford 1.6 but not yet had the boat in the water but time will tell.

Hurth is a work horse. Mine is in since 1985 and "knock on wood" is still humming.
German Precision I guess ?! Hmm even mine as a Japanese licensed product work well. So Japanese precision that is...

You will never beat the PRM 260 gearbox: much more rugged than anh Hurth, Technodrive or equivalent. Heavy though, but worth it for the solid reliability.
