Trying to help a club member, who is fitting a second hand Volvo 2003 with an MS2 gearbox circa 2002 into his boat.
Does anyone on here know how he can find out what ratio of the gearbox is.
Thanks

if he hasn't yet fitted it, place a marker on both shafts - just a dot from a marker pen will suffice, turn the input and simply count how many turns are required to obtain a full turn from the output. Thats your ratio.

If it's a hydraulic box that won't work. There's an MS2 on e bay, its 3:1

Most references to that box on google say 2.37:1 http://www.boatpartsandspares.co.uk/volvo-penta-ms2b-gearbox-2371-ratio-600-p.asp

There should be a plate on it with the ratio stamped thereon.

It would be a good idea to disconnect the box from the engine anyway to check the splined drive to the gear box as this frets and wears and then stops driving...There is a fix if it has not been done.

If this box has a hex drive then it has been modded.

While apart you can physically check the ratio if the plate is missing.

I had the MS3B on my last boat which I had to rebuild. The box has two cone clutches one up and one down, for fwd and astern. Each has the same in / out ratio, so you simply select your preference for forward according to which way you move the external lever. Not a hydraulic box.

I have asked Volvo with the details on the plate on my gearbox.

I would suggest calling the local Volvo Penta dealer with the serial number and he should be able to tell you very easily. If you don't have a friendly dealer call the dealer I use 01493 441383 (Nigel Haylett) who help me out with the most obscure items and silly question.

If its a Volvo 2003, it won't be from 2002, that would make it a 2030. Irrelevant for the gearbox ratio though

Thanks for that, the engine number starts with 53, plus another 8 digits I cannot remember, so it will not have to have the spline modification.

"Lakey" , thanks for that too, the top of the box is still very visible so I shall point him in that direction.

Thanks for all the help one and all.
