Hi

I am trying to identify a gearbox fitted to my tugs 2ltr Ford banana diesel engine.

Reason being it goes into forward and reverse, however the selector arm has little or no neutral. You physically need to hold the selector in a tiny position or it will engage forward or reverse.

Just hoping to find out if it's something that can be adjusted or oil.

Have searched the net for a few weeks but no joy. Closest I can find is a Parsons which is almost identical.

Thanks for any light you maybe able to shine on this.

Whilst I don't know that particular gearbox its a common problem with some gearboxes, including the Kanzaki boxes fitted to most Yanmars that the gear selection relies on a sprung steel ball engaging with notches in a selector plate. The central position is neutral and the plate suffers most wear at that point. You may need to strip the gearbox and either replace the selector plate or have it built up with weld and re-profiled if no spares are available.

Don’t think it’s a parson box unless very old ie pre ww11
you could try parsonsmathwaymarine.co.uk/parsons_gearboxes.htm

could be a paragon though I think it was a similar barrel shaped box

Thank you

I may take it out to check for more infomation.

Im now thinking its probably too old to be worrying about it
and fitting a new one or outboard to make space.

If its only a worn selector plate, which is most likely, it should be pretty easy to fix. You might even get away with just filing the central notch a bit deeper and/or replacing the detent spring.
