Advice please! I have a Yanmar 3HM35F engine, 2000 hours. No previous gearbox problem or transmission oil consumption problem. At recent service the mechanic changed the gearbox oil and (as I later discovered when we drained the remaining oil) filled the gearbox with engine oil rather than the ATF recommended for this engine and transmission. Next run out I motored for 8 hours continuously (light winds crossing Anglesey to Dublin) and on checking afterwards had had a very serious gearbox oil leak, probably shaft seal failure, and then drive failure with complete transmission slippage at anything over tickover revs despite refilling with ATF. The gearbox has had to come out for repair or replacement.
Has anyone had similar problems or knowledge of problems that may be caused by using engine oil instead of ATF? Would higher pressure have developed which might have blown the shaft seal and lost lubricant suddenly which might have led to transmission failure? Any views on likely life expectancy of this gearbox?
The mechanic is on holiday presently, we shall have an interesting discussion when he returns!
