I am looking at the Beta 13.5hp engine which is listed as having three gearbox options:
1) Technodrive
2) PRM (extra 50 quid)
3) Hurth (extra 100) - all mechanical
What does the team think about the best bet?

I like the Technodrive. The Hurth also has a great reputation as long as you dont mind that its a bit clunky.

Success

Have a look at the Vega Owners site at http://www.albinvega.co.uk/ as they use this eengine as a standard replacement.

Re: Gearbox choice:Roger

The manual for the Technodrive (supplied without oil) on my Beta 20hp says to use ATF, and failure to do so invalidates the warranty!
Brilliant engine & box!

i have the Nanni 4150 fitted with P.R.M.150.
it is reported by thr Importers ( Peachment) to be quieter & more reliable than mecanicial boxes.
it is possible ( though not tried it ) to go from full ahead to full astear ie crash the box without damage to the box.
u will req either folding / feathering prop or brake to stop the shaft turning
i am now up to 200 hrs

The PRM 150 is a Hydraulic gearbox and you can indeed go straight from forward to reverse, but not sure this is always a good idea, but this is why they generally fit them to hire boats on the Broads. (Idiot proof). About £250 cheaper is the PRM 120, which I have just purchased, being as how I don't consider myself an idiot, and can let the revs drop before I change direction. Very simple gearbox and uses engine oil. cost approx. £450.
