I have an oldish Bukh 35 horse engine. I am finding astern gear OK but forward is a little reluctant to engage. Gear lever in and a bit of throttle and it needs persuading then with a kick more and a wait and it will jump in. But, that can be embarrassing in tight marina locations etc.

What can I do about checking out the gearbox? There is a full daffy of oil and as it runs in astern I cant see why it should make me wait nervously for ahead.

Help please.

Could be the gear change cable is out of adjustment, and not pushing the lever far enough forward to engage. Forward and reverse should engage at about the same distance from the centre of neutral. It needs very little on these boxes to put that out of adjustment.

There is a degree of adjustment on the cable ends if it is a normal 'morse' type. Release the little lock nut on the terminal fitting, and screw it in or out to get the adjustment you need.
