Gear box MS4A Volvo Penta

My Hallberg Rassy 45 (1990) is equipped with an engine Volvo Penta TMD31B with a gear box MS4A 1,93:1. When I put forward and reverse (at 500 rpm) the transmission to the shaft is increasingly very sharp and noisy (in the last 2 months - once was not). It seems no clatch, oil Shell 80W-90. After starting, everything runs well. Mechanic (in Greek Ionian Islands) says it is ok like this. What can happen? something can break? Any suggestions?

Can you confirm the grade of oil - sounds like you might be using a hypoid which is ultra slippery and not effective nor designed for cone clutches, or simply too thick an oil. I would suggest trying a simple engine oil like 15W-40 or even SAE30 which is what I used in my VP MS3 on my boat before last.
 
No I think 80w-90 is the correct oil for this gearbox, but I don't know why it's making a noise like that.
Have you tried draining the oil? How clean is it? If it's very dirty or has particles in it, that might be an indication of some mechanical problem inside which warrants further investigation, i.e. a strip down.

My boat has the same gearbox (x2) but apart from a clunk when drive is engaged the drive is very quiet when running.

I have just changed oil trying to solve problem. Before I used Shell 80W/90 for manual transmission. Now in Greece I found Shell Spirax manual transmission fluid and gear sets S2 G 80W-90 API GL-4. I also put a VETUS flexible coupling (bullflex 1) but no difference.
In Greek islands I cannot disassemble the gear box as not enough qualified mechanics. hope to find here a boat with same gear box and compare my excessive noise. I am anyway worried something can break in the gear.

Tks very much for your suggestion. Unfortunately I have a MS4A but anyway congratulations for your manual MS3B very well made. You know where I can find a manual for MS4A and for the engine MD31B (always VOLVO PENTA)?
