Gavi\'s jaunt to Ramsgate - many photos
I have been trying to figure out how to post the story of this amazing journey. The idea was to help take a classic boat from Richmond to Brest for a festival. We had a great week but I wouldn't want to have all of the experiences visible online. To that end, I ask that no-one posts the boat name in any replies. I think you should see a few photos though:
Here is the vessel that we were to crew on the hard:
Approaching Hammersmith bridge, we (well the pilot) timed it to almost the minute to get head room...
Which he did
Just! London was wet:
But then the barrier approached, and beyond it I was given the wheel. One of the most exciting and scary moments of my life (until Thursday of the same week).
SWMBO took the wheel too... it is a bit bigger than Shikara's! (this boat is 100ft, ours 24ft)
A happy crew at sea (brownie points for spotting what they are doing)
Is that Herne Bay?
We then anchored in The Swale and had a wonderful evening. the next day we headed towards Ramsgate. Went aground at 51.24.29N 001.16.50E (would be interested in your views of depth there at low tide). I then took her around and into Ramsgate in a F5. THIS was the scariest moment of my life so far. It was very different from a Freeman 24 going into a lock or a med PB. But it was an experience I will cherish for life.
Here she is, against the wall:
I had never encountered harbour ladders before - I went up them sober, and down less so. Here are some shots (the chap is my French mate, Etienne):
What a trip.
