I have stripped down and cleaned out my gearbox of a Sole Mini - 18 (sorting out oil leak out and water leak in). Unfortunately there appears to be only one distributer in the UK for Sole, and getting parts appears to be a problem.

I think I can re-use the bearings and oil seals I suspect are pretty generic so I should be able to source those from a good auto factors.

In the past for less import engines (lawn mower motors) I have used cornflake boxes for gasket material. I would welcome any suggestions for a more suitable alternative. How good are these tubes of blue gunk that are sold as replacement gasket material? Can I get oil resistant paper?

TIA

It would be an advantage if you could use a gasket rather then the blue hylomar paste, the paste is good, but it would be better to try and source of gasket paper and cut one out yourself. a local motor factors(not halfords) should be able to get you some.

or even ebay

You can actually buy gasket sheets of varying thicknesses. Not sure where from but Google should help. You simply use the old gasket as a template and hey presto. A very sharp craft knife and a steady hand are obviously essential. Very good for simple gaskets - not so for more irregular shapes.

use a plastic hammer on the casting face to make an accurate gasket. (lay the material over the face and then tap round the profile, knives are less accurate/satisfying)

If it's a thin gasket you could use an old admiralty chart as the material - and as someone else has said use a hammer (ball pien) to knock it out - the round end for the holes.

Use an old Admiralty chart(Thich papar type) 1/2 of our old MN ships survived quite well on them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why not Halfords? They sell gasket paper

yes they might do, but i am sure the price won't be right.

all packaged into a nice marketing box which will cost the earth, compared with the local factors selling by the sheet of the correct thickness you require, and not having to buy an assorted box of sheets for loadsofmoney...
