I want a simple gas torch that can generate enough heat to free seized components but which has a well controlled and focussed flame so that I don't set the whole boat on fire.....

Present torch has a useless wafty flame.

Any recomendations?

+1 versatile bit of kit, bit pricey but lasts for years, coincidentally used mine on boat at weekend very controllable flame

I see it describes itself as a brazing torch. Will it braze without oxygen, as shown in the pic?

I have one of these on the van https://www.screwfix.com/p/rothenberger-soldering-brazing-trigger-torch/7586k

Pretty much the same as the previously posted one, but a bit easier to use with the remote gas cartridge. The MAP gas gives a very hot flame, although i haven't used it for brazing i imagine it would work ok for plumbing jobs.

Toolstation stock MAP gas at a good price.

I don't know if it would be too fierce but this is what we use in the workshop..

An excellent choice (says he having used one for the last 10 years of his working life). If the supplied nozzle is too fierce then smaller ones can be had that are very focussed indeed.

The torch will certainly silver solder and braze copper fittings but you would need a swirl nozzle.

I have one of these: https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p71324?r=googleshopping&rr=marin&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&mkwid=sjQxjLAvt_dc&pcrid=142002554548&pkw=&pmt=&product=71324&gclid=Cj0KCQiAl8rQBRDrARIsAEW_To_WfChZyHS7wPfnIBnfloHc8eHVpz43ZbSvX6_23yzwi3mBwiQi2h8aAlNEEALw_wcB
A bit cheaper than the rothenburger ones and has three tips that are great, anything from big swirly flame (idea for plumbing...) to a small flame, great for nuts etc where you don't want to heat the surrounds to much.
I use it with the propane cylinders but with MAPP it should get pretty damn hot.

I have an Irodo gas soldering iron. Awesome bit of kit. If you take of the soldering tip you get an 20mm long flame thats a few mm wide - very useful for applying heat to a very small area. Obviously the best feature is that its a very good soldering iron though, fills from a lighter gas refill can.

Yes will braze and silver solder very well when used with MAPP gas, standard tool for refrigeration engineers for copper, brass and steel work, flame very controllable

I confess,

We use a domestic, kitchen, torch - the sort you use for creme brûlée. I use it for heat shrink sleeves, freeing Loctite, sealing rope and bungy. Its small enough and has a short nozzle so can be taken up a mast and used in tight places.

Cheap, disposable cylinder.

I have an even smaller one that is a variation on a cigarette lighter.

They are not, obviously, as macho as the previous ones.

So cheap you can buy one and try it - if its does not suit relegate to the kitchen. Available from any decent kitchen utensil shop.

Again at the smaller/cooler/cheaper end of the scale, I bought a small butane-refillable soldering iron / torch set from Aldi / Workzone, to silver solder small clock parts. It came with 3 soldering tips and a cylindrical shield which is useful for heatshrink; it has no rope cutter blade, but has a fine torch flame and is good value IMO for £15. Not sure about current availability, but worth a look out if that’s the end of the scale you are after.
