Gas strut fixing

Couple of guys at N.Weald Boat Jumble selling very tasty all s/s gas struts, various sizes for £2 each. Chap in next row
at £10 each not happy.
On behalf of all those who got them, they went in minutes-would you believe. Does one just whack them in where they
'look right' or is there some geometry involved.
 
Umm, yep lots of geomerty involved. Well sort of. They can only be compressed so far. If you go past that point and compress them to much all the gas is lost due to the seal er...not sealing. Basically you've gone passed the polished bit of the shaft. Don't worry unduly tho, you can get them refilled. I had some done on the porsche. Cost about a tenner each to do. They all go in the end.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!
 
Just remember when fixing... thick side up
