I discovered a leak on my boats gas system, having seen the pictures in the southampton echo, where a boat blew up killing 1 person and critically injuring another i wanted it checked properly, but all the local companies only do domestic systems, any way I found a guy called Dave Brooks, of Gas Check Marine who specialises in boats gas systems, any one else concerned contact me and I will forward his details.

I have a guage permanently on my system that shows if you have a problem. Available from most Caravan shops allowing a manual or automatic change over for 2 cylinders.

trouble is the gauges tell you if there is a leak, that may be to late, if you saw the pictures and read about the death, it makes you think not to have a gas fire on the boat

Guage tells you more than that you have a solid system, they also tell you rough contents (by comparative pressure reading). A check by a corgi engineer is not going to tell you any more than the guage does - that at that time the system is sound, so unless you have retained the services of that engineer and take him with you all the time, the engineer will not tell you as much as the guage does!

All we can do is minimise the risks. I have done what I can to make the system as sound as I can, and have been given a tick in the box by a friendly engineer, and now I monitor my system all the time, I have flame failure devices on all outlets, and individual switches for different circuits so that I can isolate areas as needed.

Please 'scuse the blatant plug, you can find someone to check your boat's gas system here www.boatsafetyscheme.com and you can also read what the minimum safety conditions are for boats on inland waterways e.g. is your gas cylinder stored safely? It's all fairly straightforward stuff.
PS we recommend to inland boaters to have bubble testers fitted so that gas-tightness can be checked by the boat owner/skipper, simply and safely on a routine basis.
Cheers and regards
